Kaos's phone call interrupted a well-deserved shower. I reached for the towel hanging outside the faded blue shower curtain. My body tensed, thinking this might be the call I was hoping to avoid. Earlier in the week, going back to work didn't sound too bad, but now, the thought of leaving felt like rocks in my gut.

"Hey, what's up?" My unenthusiastic tone echoed off the bathroom walls.

"Is that any way to greet your bestie? I'm fucking bored, that's what's up. You're not here. Mixx is out with the whole wrist thing. Bronx volunteered to take the trainees on an overnight in the mountains. Being with Layla has made him a sucker for shit like that. King has the day off. He and Kenzie are looking for a place to rent together, so they're a big deal now. Thank god I haven't lost my best buddy to a woman," he joked. "Looks like it's just you and me and all the rest of the women in the world. Not too bad, eh?"

"Sure." I dried myself off.

"What the fuck kind of answer is that? Kaos and Angus and millions of women? We've barely cracked the surface."

I laughed as I headed out of the bathroom. The coffee pot had finished brewing its shitty cup of coffee.

"And now my best friend is laughing at what I think is a pretty fucking awesome situation. Wait. You seem weird."

"Is that any different than normal?" I poured the coffee and winced at the taste. "Shit, why do hotels always find the worst coffee brands. Tastes like something that got scraped off asphalt."

"You're avoiding the subject," Kaos said. I was relieved he wasn't calling to let me know I needed to head back to base camp. The fact that they gave King the day off assured me conditions weren't high risk at the moment. But I didn't want to get into a discussion about women with Kaos. Definitely not right now, when my head was filled with one in particular.

"Not avoiding any subject. Just listening to my friend blather on about a lot of shit. I just got up. My head isn't ready for your onslaught of nonsense."

Kaos paused. "That confirms my suspicions. You just got up. You're avoiding the subject of women. You met someone. Fucking hell, some hot, little babe has grabbed my best friend by the balls."

I could never lie to Kaos. One thing was certain, the guy knew me so fucking well that he could sense my new found state of confusion with my few word responses and through the phone, no less. Maybe I needed to give myself a break and talk about what the hell was going on in my life. Not that Kaos was ideal for a short therapy session, but, with the exception of my sister, he knew me better than anyone.

I put down the unsatisfying cup of coffee and sat on the edge of the bed. "Hell, Kaos, don't know how it happened. I was just fucking blindsided. Funny thing is she absolutely loathed me at first.
